We are a group of UC Berkeley Mechanical Engineering students in ME 122 (Processing of Materials in Manufacturing) who want to build stuff and do research. So we found a project that involved both while involving an interesting topic. We leaned a little towards research because we have the rest of our lives to do manufacturing and prototyping, but not that much time to do research at such a great university.
